‘Be careful what you wish for’. Stephen’s sage advice after I grumbled about the weather being just a few degrees too hot again today. He’s absolutely right if course. Whilst we had to keep the liquid flowing today and had a particularly hot climb after lunch, these conditions after infinitely preferable to driving rain (which may well come as payback when we get to Scotland). We decided to cut today’s total to around 70 miles rather than the 80 planned and will lengthen tomorrow’s ride. Another stunning bit of route planning by Stephen – we tracked canal and cycle paths for the opening 40km today, across Runcorn bridge and then through the old industrial lands of the Mersey and Manchester ship canal. We then headed north through Lamcashire to our b+b, passing through the centre of Preston (not as bad as we thought). It’s official – we are now in The North. B+B landlady even did our washing – she deserves a medal!
