Quite a turn around in our fortunes today. The wind hadn’t disappeared but was much less forceful and the sun was already shining as we set out early before 8 to make sure we caught the ferry to Arran at 12.30. A quick undulating 25 miles took us to Ardrossan for a cup of tea and the first of our 2 ferry rides today. The weather was beautiful – clear blue skies all day. We can hardly believe our good fortune to be having to peel off layers and add more sunscreen – in the southern Highlands in April! At Arran we briefly met up with the mother of Susan, a friend of Ilse’s (Stephen’s other half), before having a very leisurely 14 mile ride around the island to Lochranza for the ferry to Kintyre. The mountains on Arran are pretty dramatic despite being not so high – we both fancy coming back to walk on them. A final 11 mile stint took us to the lovely fishing port of Tarbert. A low mileage day (just over 50 miles in the end) and possibly our most enjoyable – perhaps those two facts aren’t unconnected! Back to real Highland hills tomorrow.
